NUNO-FELT WALL HANGINGS

For decades I have yearned to hear sounds in response to my visual art. In 2023 I asked a remarkable, skilled and motivated musician to breath the image of my work into her entire being and then intentionally express spontaneously. With much appreciation and gratitude I thank Audrey Weatherstone for her willingness to co-create with me. I am very much looking forward to future creative adventures together.

What is Nuno Felt?

Nuno Felting is done by blending wool fibers with other materials. The fibers are handled with great care along with fabric pieces. Once the design is laid out on a surface, soapy water is carefully applied to the entire piece and then gently rolled in a bundle with a textured surface. Through the agitation/motion, all parts bond with one another and shrink. This is an over simplification of nuno-felting. No needles are used in this process. No knitting is done in my work. I primarily combine silks, upcycled fabrics, vintage laces, tatting and gauze with the wool. Often the fabrics I use are dyed with pieces of rusty objects. Soon, I expect to be incorperating eco-dying of the fabrics to offer me an expanded palette from the natural world.

NunoFelting was first invented by Polly Stirling, an inovative, textile artist. Much information about her can be found on the web as well as videos on how to do this exciting process.

The history of felting is facinating and this information can also be researched on the web. The earliest felting discovered has been wall coverings from 6500 BC in Turkey!
